This forum explores multi-disciplinary intersections in the academic study of ritual(s) and rite(s). It brings together archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, linguists, and other researchers interested in advancing theoretical and methodological approaches to universal elements in our society both past and present. We aim to facilitate conversations and collaborations between colleagues based across the globe, at a time when face-to-face discussion is limited. By sharing expertise it is anticipated that we may explore intersecting ideas, methods and models and generate discussions that are thought provoking and provocative. As such, it is not a repository for site-specific case studies (although we encourage you to put this information in to the project gallery) but instead a place for colleagues with a shared interest in ritual studies to come together and progress this sub-discipline.
We have intentionally kept the theme of this research forum broad. Rather than searching for universal archetypes we anticipate research directions will emerge organically, as online ’round table’ discussions are proposed and implemented by host organisation(s). A topic will be proposed (and voted upon) by our members, with the expectation being that these ’round tables’ will be led by various international institutions based on interest and areas of expertise. To kick off, we propose that the first round-table will be on the topic of ‘Powerful Stones’ to be held on Wednesday 10 November 2021. Contributions in the form of 10 min presentations (live or recorded) are cordially invited from anyone interested. The assembled members at the meeting will discuss and agree the topic and convener of the next meeting timetabled for Spring 2022.
Additionally, the project gallery will showcase exciting research in this space, stemming from non-traditional visual and/ or audio outputs (photographs, art works, videos).
